  HISTORY :

        The first settlement were established by the Dutch in 1638.Later the French and British arrived on the island. Mauritius became independent from Britain only in 1968.

        The legendary extinct "Dodo"

         On Mauritius you can  find endemic* species occurring  nowhere else in the world.

"Endemic" Wiktionary:

         (Especially of plants and animals) Plants and Animals particular to an area or region; not found in other places. Like Kangaroos  are endemic to Australia.

Threatened Wildlife of Mauritius :

        Nature of Mauritius is composed of its flora and fauna. Due to its geographic isolation, a high proportion of these are endemic species. Many of these are now threatened with extinction because of human activities including habitat destruction and the introduction of non-native species. Some have already become extinct, most famously the Dodo which disappeared in the 17th century.
